New Zealand Post Writers and Readers Week
Writing May Be a Little Retro… : On Words and SoundDo words interwoven with sound qualify as literature? What is the relationship between language and the evolution of popular culture? Are new generations experiencing text through music rather than on the page? Join four people who work in both media as they come together to explore the worlds of music and text, sound and art, and cultural expression in the face of globalisation. Paul D Miller is a writer, musician and conceptual artist, best known as DJ Spooky. His book Rhythm Science (2004) is a manifesto on the DJ’s art of sampling and reassembling sound. Writer and indie musician Gareth Shute enjoyed success at the 2005 Montana New Zealand Book Awards with his book Hip Hop Music in Aotearoa. Hinemoana Baker is a writer and musician who uses both poetry and music as literary languages to explore identity and place; as does renowned singer/ songwriter Don McGlashan, who was Auckland University’s 2001 Writer-in-Residence. Chair: Nick Bollinger
