New Zealand Post Writers and Readers Week
The War ZoneNotwithstanding the horrors of war, there can be little doubt that one of the fruits of conflict is debate. Whether explored through fiction, journalism or graphics, the depiction of war provides a starting point for expanding our understanding and broadening our world view. Robert Fisk, well known to New Zealand audiences through his syndicated columns, shares with us a different experience of the Middle East to that described in many of our news stories. He’s joined in that pursuit by Joe Sacco who has charted the stories of Palestine and Bosnia in the graphic form. Nuruddin Farah’s novels chronicle the realities of civil war and its aftermath in Somalia, and Aleksandar Hemon uses his homeland of Bosnia-Herzegovina as the landscape for much of his fiction. In this wide-ranging discussion they will challenge each other and the audience with their opinions, experience and knowledge of writing about and in the midst of war.
