Simon Armitage

Right Here, Right Now: Simon Armitage

The New Generation’s slogan ‘Poetry is the new rock ‘n’ roll’ may have been coined for Simon Armitage, but it goes only part way towards capturing his immense talent and appeal. A gifted storyteller and master of unassuming lyricism and comic timing, Armitage is a poet with nine Faber & Faber titles to his name including, most recently, Selected Poems (2001). His sharply observed poetry combines savvy British vernacular with relaxed formal control and has its finger firmly on the pulse of contemporary British life. Widely regarded as one of the leading poets of his generation, he is equally well received at literary festivals and at the local pub. Armitage has also worked extensively in film, radio and television. Several of his poems – including "Killing Time", with its devastating retelling of the Columbine High School massacre, and "Drinking for England" – were written especially for television. Armitage’s prose includes the bestselling All Points North (1998), and two novels, Little Green Man (2001) and The White Stuff (2004).
