Nowhere Man: Aleksandar Hemon"The man is a maestro, a conjuror, a channeler of universes. At the same time, he is the guy in the black coat, slouching at the corner table." (Esquire) In 1992, Aleksandar Hemon travelled to Chicago from Sarajevo for a month-long journalist exchange programme. When war erupted at home, Hemon was granted asylum as a political refugee. Three years later he began writing fiction in English. Hemon’s first book, the story collection The Question of Bruno (2000), was voted one of the best books of the year by The New York Times, Esquire, The Village Voice, and Los Angeles Times. His novel Nowhere Man (2003) was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award. Hemon’s fictions are set in his native Bosnia-Herzegovina and in his ‘new world’; in both he uses autobiography as a starting point to chronicle experiences of war and immigration. For Hemon, "all of [human life] is historical at some level – the only question being what details are chosen." Chair: Laura Kroetsch
