New Zealand Post Writers and Readers Week
Writers in the Regions: In TransitJoin this group of distinguished international writers, all of whom share the experience of having left the cultures that shaped them and learned to live elsewhere. Lyndall Gordon’s memoir about growing up in South Africa sits beside an outstanding body of literary biography including work on Mary Wollstonecraft, Virginia Woolf and Henry James; Aleksandar Hemon sought political asylum in the US in 1992 when Sarajevo came under siege and is now recognised as one of literature’s brightest stars; Teresia Teaiwa has charted a Pacific trajectory from Honolulu where she was born, to Fiji and New Zealand. Her poetry has been published in print, audio and Internet forms and she was a contributing editor to the Encyclopedia of Post-Colonial Literatures in English. All three will read from their work and discuss the legacy of their cultural origins.
