"... There is no such thing as an accurate description of a place. A place is just a figment of the imagination. We have to evolve it for ourselves." (Jan Morris, Looking for the Spirit of Place) For many writers and readers today, travel is both a necessity and a privilege. As the globe shrinks, our curiosity about foreign places grows, both satisfied and further fuelled by our journeys overseas and the books we pick up. Celebrated travel writer Jan Morris argues that capturing the spirit of place is a creative act, an amalgam of fact and imagination. For this, the final session of New Zealand Post Writers and Readers Week, we have invited a panel of writers to share with you places they have seen and imagined. International writers Ronald Wright, Michelle de Kretser, Suketu Mehta and Robert Hass join New Zealanders Ian Wedde, Tusiata Avia and Peter Wells in a spirited homage to the places that have captured their imaginations. New Zealand Post Chief Executive John Allen will host the proceedings.
