Joe Sacco

Comics, Seriously: Joe Sacco

"The best journalism contains some art and the best art contains some journalism." This is how Time Magazine applauds the work of award-winning comic journalist Joe Sacco. Born in Malta, raised in Australia and the United States, Sacco trained as a journalist before he began writing comics. What sets Sacco apart in the world of graphic artists/writers is that his work isn’t just autobiographical, nor is it fiction. Sacco tells the stories of real people, and in most of his books these people are living in times of war. His collections of comics include Palestine (2001), an account of life during the first Intifada; Safe Area Gorazde (2002), which chronicles life in war-torn Eastern Bosnia; and The Fixer: A Story from Sarajevo (2003), which tells the story of a deeply suspicious man making his living off the war. With these collections, Sacco "has singlehandedly created a media subgenre: comix journalism." (Time Magazine) His most recent book is War’s End: Profile from Bosnia 1995-1996 (2005).
