At Home and Abroad in Times of War

Writers in the Regions: At Home and Abroad in Times of War

The experience of going to war has left an indelible mark on the evolution of our nation. It has also enriched our literary landscape. Three New Zealanders share stories that draw on this legacy: Arts Foundation of New Zealand Icon Patricia Grace won the Montana New Zealand 2005 Deutz Medal for her moving book Tu (2004), a poignant tale inspired by her father's diary, of a Maori family negotiating World War II. Leon Davidson has produced two fine books for children – Scarecrow Army: The Anzacs at Gallipoli (2005) and Red Haze: Australians and New Zealanders in Vietnam (2006); Barry Soutar is part of an oral history project team that has spent 12 years collecting the stories of the C Company, 28 Maori Battalion and will publish them in book form in 2006. Listen to them read from their work and reflect upon the New Zealand experience of Gallipoli, the Ma-ori Battalion and the Vietnam War.
