Flashpoints - In the Eye of the Storm: Robert FiskNew Zealand Post Writers and Readers Week Robert Fisk is one of the world’s best-known journalists, having honed his craft covering conflict, first in Northern Ireland and then in Lebanon and the Middle East. Fisk has written about the region since 1976 when he was posted to Beirut, first for The Times and since 1989 for rival broadsheet The Independent. His highly personalised reportage and commentary are often critical of United States' and Israeli foreign policy, and provoke strong reactions from both fans and detractors. An Arabic speaker, Fisk has interviewed Osama bin Laden in person three times. His account of the meetings feature in his latest book, The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East (2005), which tracks 90 years of "the pain, injustice and genocide" of the region. Reviewer and fellow foreign correspondent Phillip Knightley says of the book that it outlines the author’s ethical, philosophical and moral approach to his life’s work. "His triumph is that he has turned a slightly dubious and over-romanticised craft into an honourable profession."
